Description
The jabuti was thinking deeply about it when, by coincidence, the jaguar was passing nearby looking for some quarry and, looking upwards casually, saw him on the mango-tree.
"Why!! Since when do jabutis climb up trees?" She wondered. "There's something quite strange in this and I'll find out right now!"
And approaching the tree:
"Hello, there, Mr. Jabuti! What happened to you, for you to stay up there as if you were a bird?"
Our friend heard this and gulped, for he had already guessed her intentions; but disguised his fear and answered as naturally as he could:
"It was a trick from that silly monkey, Mrs. Jaguar. I was persuaded to be taken to get some fruit and then he left me here by myself!"
"More's the pity!!" The jaguar replied, pretending sympathy. "But as you are my friend, I really want to help you. Would you like me to climb up and take you now??"
"No, no, ma'am!!" The jabuti could hardly mask his fright. "My dear good lady Mrs. Jaguar mustn't have all this work over me, damaging your nice claws on such a hard trunk! I won't permit it! I have a better idea: what if I jump down so that you can catch me in your mouth?"
The jaguar smiled and rubbed her paws, satisfied. Once having the jabuti in her claws, he was guaranteed to be her lunch, no doubt!!
"That's a great idea, Mr. Jabuti!" She approved enthusiastically. "Come on, I'm just waiting for you!"
"Alright, I'll jump right now!!"
He gave a little impulse and jumped down the tree, just in direction of the jaguar, who had her mouth open, just expecting the moment when she would get him at last.
But what she didn't expect was he had fallen down backwards, with his shell turned to her muzzle, so he banged the jaguar so hardly that she fainted!!
The monkey heard the noise and got back; from downwards he saw the jabuti with the jaguar by his side "sleeping" like a log.
"Hey there!!" He shouted. "How did you get off the tree, Mr. Jabuti??"
The jabuti gave him a beatific smile.
"Getting off, my friend monkey... Simply getting off!"

Brilliant work on the watercolours once again, the perspective and the jaguar's spots are awesome. Funny end to the story, too.
